Cultivating Wellness in a World of Unwell

Updated: Mar 17

Be the master of your wellness with a few simple not-so-easy steps. The reason these steps aren't so easy is because they require you to go inward to get to know yourself inside and out. That can be terrifying for many, but illuminating.

1. Take a Page Out of "The Art of Not Giving a F**k" Book

In a world of unwell, there are a lot of things to "give a f**k" about, but it can be overwhelming to try to care about everything. The constant barrage of information we have become accustomed to can lead many into hyper-funk, not directing their energy to the things that bring them joy and/or they have the power to do something about.

ree

Tip:

Get to know your authentic-self on a deep level to discover what you truly "give a f**k" about. Don't try to care about something that doesn't authentically light you up inside. That will only create cognitive dissonance internally draining your of vital energy.

2. Re-Discover What Lit You Up As a Child

We are all adult-children walking around through life, essentially, wanting to connect, love, and to be loved. But some of us have forgotten our inner child for whatever reason. Typically, we forget our inner child from shame. We get disconnected from our true essence, our authentic-self we were born into the world as after life's circumstances forces us to create an ego to keep us safe and survive this world. Think back to when you were between the ages of 7 and 14? What lit you up? What did you love doing for hours upon hours?

ree

Tip:

Start to incorporate some of these activities into your daily life. If you loved finger painting, you could modify it to painting on canvases with brushes. Or if you loved playing the backyard, you could make sure you get time in nature to walk, run, or to create something. Just because our chronological age says we are an adult doesn't mean we have to be disconnected

with our inner child that is curious and unwaivered by the world and its survival shell.

3. Connect

We were put on the planet to connect, but in modern society and even worse, in a pandemic, it is harder than ever. Even prior to COVID, disconnection was a prevailing among most. With depression and anxiety at all time highs, humans are not getting the same communal support as we used to have before the advent of smartphones and the internet. Although, technology and the internet has brought many out of poverty and is an equalizing force for humanity, it is necessary to get face-to-face time with humans, animals, and nature. Take time to connect safely with loved ones, people of your community, animals, nature, and most importantly, yourself.

Tip:

Instead of sending a text, pick up the phone and call a friend just to say hi. Go to an in person class, once it's safe.

4. Eat To Feel Good

Everyone's body chemistry is a little different. The diet you chose should be one that makes you feel alive, vibrant, and healthy. Notice how your skin looks with your diet. Pay attention to your energy levels and your tongue and breathe. Yes, I said tongue and breathe. There are many indicators for health that are visible and don't require a blood test, not to say you shouldn't test your blood annually for any precarious bio markers. Please do that! But I encourage you to take your health a step further, being your own physician. Notice if certain foods make you feel bloated and lethargic after eating them. There isn't a one-size fits all diet for humans. We are complex and all have different micro-biomes.

ree

Tip:

If you have a food sensitivity, it's not the end of the world. You can substitute ingredients to retrain your brain to like the new substitution. It usually takes around 21 days for your brain to get used to the new way of doing things. A spurge here and there is okay, as long as you're staying on track 80% of the time.

5. Get Movin'

This is the dreaded concept that many of us prefer to avoid. This is normal evolutionarily. We were wired to conserve energy and be efficient as hunger-gathers. It's no wonder the majority of us don't want to go exercise for the purpose of exercising. It's a chore. But as my girl GP says on GOOP, "Exercise is like brushing your teeth, you just do it." Exercise might not make you shredded or look like a model, but its health benefits are staggering in the prevention of disease and weight gain.

ree

Tip:

Exercise just 30 mins a day. This can include walking, running, swimming, climbing, cleaning your house, walking to work, walking the dog, and the list continues; just move your body. If you can break a sweat for at least 20 mins, even better. The quick and dirty... something is better than nothing.

These tips might be pretty obvious, but sometimes the easiest fixes tend to be the hardest. Getting acquainted with your authentic-self and checking in daily will make these tips attainable and rewarding.
