I've spoken to many people about life coaching, and I feel it gets a bad reputation or an eye roll at the very least. Most people don't see the difference between a life coach and a friend you tell your issues to over lunch.
The two couldn't be more different.
The difference between a friend and a life coach is neutrality and accountability.
Neutrality
A life coach doesn't have a dog-in-the-fight, so to speak. They can objectively look at an issue or block you are experiencing to help you navigate it the best way possible without holding any judgement in a safe space. The environment a life coach cultivates for their client is safe and judgement-free.
Accountability
That leads me the other difference, accountability. It isn't your friend's job to hold you accountable for your goals, even though some great friends, will attempt to do so. Your life coach is getting paid to make sure you realize your fullest potential as discussed and made by YOU. Again, if you don't achieve your goals, the life coach doesn't judge or make you feel bad about it; however, they objectively help you identify reasons you aren't hitting your goals, and might help you pivot or come up with a new plan of action.
EXTRA: Life coaches, unlike friends and therapists, also won't tell you what to do. They facilitate a safe and open space for you to discover what YOU want or the route YOU feel is best.
I hope this short explanation was helpful. If you or anyone you know needs a little extra help with professional development, reach out to me here to get started.
